Council leader Michael Jones wants to reunify Cheshire with one new unitary authority.

The Cheshire East leader announced he is opening a debate about joining with Cheshire West and Chester to form one council to manage affairs across the county.

It would reverse the move in 2009 to split the former Cheshire County Council, which ran alongside the now-abolished borough councils for Macclesfield, Congleton and Crewe and Nantwich.

Coun Jones said a unified county council could cut council tax by £100 for every household.

He said: “Cheshire East was formed following local government reorganisation in 2009, when Cheshire County Council was carved into two.

"It didn’t make sense then and it still doesn’t.

"I’m calling for a review of our local government and set out my ambition for a unified Cheshire Council.”

A spokesman said Coun Jones is not suggesting the return of a borough council for Macclesfield.
