Residents are being urged to beware following a spate of burglaries.

Three homes were burgled in just three days last month in Wilmslow with offenders gaining entry through an open door or window.

And during the six weeks before, there were suffered 20 burglaries in the Wilmslow area, 10 of which were in Handforth and Lacey Green.

Police say that around  30 per cent of burglaries happen because a door or window has been left open or unlocked, and Wilmslow police say that residents can take some easy steps to help prevent burglaries.

Their advice includes always locking doors and accessible windows even when you are in, not leaving ladders outside, making sure you garage is secure and keeping car keys out of sight.

Other deterrents include installing security lights above doorways and alarm systems, lighting over doorways and movement sensors.

Sgt Andy Miller, of Wilmslow Police, said: “A burglar will always favour a house without an alarm over one that does have an alarm so they are worth the investment and you may see a reduction in your house insurance if you install one.

“Even something as simple as a gravel drive can put criminals off.”

“If you go to the effort of using some of these suggestions you will dramatically reduce the likelihood that you will ever be burgled. Prevention is far better then detection.”
