A drug raid at an Adlington garage unearthed a makeshift bomb which has now been defused.

The device was found this morning  at Smithy Garage and SRI Automotives on London Road, in a massive police operation.

More than 20 police vans and cars and about 40 officers from Greater Manchester Police  were involved.

The area near Adlington train station has been cordoned off and officers with sniffer dogs are still checking car bonnets and the surrounding shrubbery.

A GMP spokesman said: "Today offficers from Greater Manchester Police’s Stockport division and the Cheshire Constabulary have carried out a number of warrants at business premises on London Road, Adlington, Macclesfield.

"This is part of an ongoing operation to target the supply and distribution of drugs. "

A  Cheshire police spokeswoman said: ""During a subsequent search of the address, a small explosive device was found. As a precautionary measure, a cordon is in place in the immediate area. No evacuations are necessary at this point and specialists have been called to dispose of the item safely. "
