AN ANTI-drink drive blitz by a policeman has led to the arrest of four banned motorists in just one month.

Determined constable Darren Drinkwater, headed the borough-wide campaign in August.

PC Drinkwater's clampdown, code named Operation Mackle, led to 36 drivers being arrested for drink driving.

Twenty nine of those were charged, four of whom were already banned for the same offence.

Seven motorists who provided positive breath tests at the roadside were not charged.

In most cases it was due to further tests at the police station proving they were below the usual police prosecution minimum, the equivalent of 40 micrograms of alcohol in 100 millilitres of breath.

"Despite all the campaigns, people are still drink driving and many are persistent," said PC Drinkwater.

Although the operation has now ended, police are still stopping vehicles breaking road traffic law and where necessary, breathalysing drivers.

Drivers involved in collisions across Wilmslow, Knutsford and Macclesfield are also being given the tests.

PC Drinkwater said people react differently when cautioned.

"Most people are apologetic but there is a minority who are under the impression that the police have nothing better to do.

"But it's very important we do pull people over and stop drink drivers, especially in the run up to Christmas.

"They are putting their own and other people's lives in danger.

"Most people tend to be only slightly over the limit but we've had people who are two or three times over the limit, sometimes even more."

PC Drinkwater hopes the statistics from his month-long crackdown will stop other drink drivers getting behind the wheel.

He added: "I'd like to think people are more aware of the consequences of drink driving than they used to be and how drink driving can be a significant factor in road traffic collisions."
