Plans to create a single, more powerful council for Cheshire and Warrington have been put on hold.

Cheshire East Council has been in discussions with neighbouring councils at Warrington, Cheshire West and

Chester to create a single council under the Government’s devolution deal since 2015.

In the devolution bid in August 2015 they claimed it would give them greater control over resources in Cheshire, help create 112,000 jobs, improve transport and boost business.

The plans would include the possibility of a the county being run by a single elected mayor.

But a joint statement from the councils’ leaders has confirmed plans for a consultation have now been delayed.

The joint statement from the Leaders of Warrington, Cheshire West and Chester, and Cheshire East councils: “Following political discussions in Warrington, a potential consultation with the public and businesses on a proposed devolution deal for Cheshire and Warrington has been put on hold. We remain strongly committed to collaborative working on a number of key initiatives and we will continue to explore how best to secure more power and resources for our area.
