A dusting of snow fell across Macclesfield last night but didn't match up to forecasters predictions.

The Met Office issued a warning over icy conditions and gale force winds with a risk of snow across the region yesterday.

And while some snow settled overnight across the region, including on higher areas in Macclesfield, it was not as severe as expected.

The webcam from the Cat and Fiddle has shown snow settled on the ground.  The online service by the landlords of the Cat and Fiddle Inn with MaccInfo.com helps drivers who want to check conditions on the A537 before setting off.

A Met Office spokesman said there is a warning for high winds from 3pm this afternoon, with gusts of around 50 and 60 mph and rain moving in from the West.

But he said there are no further warnings for more snow and ice.

It will be warmer overnight but temperatures will drop tomorrow and wintry showers are possible on Friday, with a top temperature of two degrees predicted.

Firefighters have warned drivers to take care in wintry conditions after two accidents in Macclesfield earlier this week, warning that bright sunshine and ice are a deadly combination.

Both incidents occurred on Monday.  The first was at the junction of Buxton Road and Fence Avenue at 11.38am when a car collided with a wall.

A man was trapped in the vehicle.  He was released by firefighters and passed over to an ambulance crew.

The second was at 18.53 on Kendal Road.  Nobody was trapped in the car and firefighters were able to make the scene safe.

Stewart Forshaw, station manager from Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service, said: "Winter needs the most care from drivers to keep safe on the roads.

"Hard frosts, ice and snow on the roads can make driving potentially very dangerous.  It can take ten times longer to stop in icy conditions than on a dry road.  Drive slowly to allow extra room to slow down and stop, and if you do start to skid, ease off the accelerator but don't brake suddenly.

"Every year we attend hundreds of road traffic collisions, rescuing drivers and their passengers and providing emergency first aid and trauma care.  These incidents can be devastating not only to those involved but to their loved ones and friends.  I would urge everyone to take note of our winter driving safety advice."
