Fallen soldiers were honoured at Remembrance Day services across town.

The Wilmslow parade journeyed from the Legion on Grove Avenue to St Bartholomew’s Church where the service was held before wreath laying at the war memorial.

Coun Martin Watkins, chairman of Wilmslow Town Council who was in the RAF for 27 years, said:  "I've never seen St Bart's Church as busy as it was, and never seen as many people as there were outside at the memorial.

"The centenary of the First World War has brought people out to honour the soldiers.

"It's brought to light many stories of the soldiers who died.  We have been doing research to get their stories together and will do so until 2018 when we hope to publish everything we have found out.

"It highlights the men who died but also the families they left behind.

"Remembrance is not just about the two world wars, it's about the recent conflicts too and we must never forget."

Alderley Edge British Legion organised a parade from Festival Hall to the cenotaph on Ryleys Lane before a service at St Philip and St James Church.

The Handforth service in St Chad’s Church featured wreaths laid at the memorial plaque, which now includes the name of Lance Corporal Jamie Webb, who died in Afghanistan last March.

Coun Anthony Harrison said: “It was moving for everyone to see Jamie’s name. The turnout was exceptional.”

Collections will be taken at Handforth Dean from Monday, November 17, to Wednesday, November 19, for the campaign to create a Handforth war memorial.

Pupils from Year 1 to Year 8 paid their respects this morning during the school’s two minute silence for our Armistice service.

Pupils at Terra Nova School gathered for an Armistice Day assembly today to sing hymns and an address was given by Deputy Head, Richard Lynn.

Headmaster Mark Mitchell led the school in prayers and Bursar, Hayley Jordan, read out the Roll of the Fallen of Terra Nova School.

All pupils then took part in a two minute silence, followed by an act of commitment from Head Girl, Tallulah Goldsmith, and an exhortation by Head Boy, Max Rosser.
