A dad’s supermarket trip took a bizarre turn when he found two very unexpected items in the bagging area.

Phill Maher, 40, was shopping in Tesco Macclesfield when he bumped into Jay Lethal and Sonjay Dutt – stars of the American wrestling franchise Total Nonstop Action (TNA).

The muscular pair are staying in the town ahead of a contest in Stockport on Sunday, part of a UK tour.

Phill, a self-confessed wrestling addict, invited them home to tea – and to his shock they accepted.

Jay, 28, and Sonjay, 31, met Phill’s family – wife Yvonne and children, Dexter, five and twins Grace and Faye, four - before wolfing down a homecooked meal of brown rice, chicken and salad.

It was a dream come true for Phill, from Bollington, who has been a wrestling fan since he was five-years-old.

Phill, 40, a legal consultant, said: “I’ve loved wrestling since I was little. It’s like a soap opera. Every match has a different story, you just have to suspend disbelief and enjoy it.

“I recognised Jay and Sonjay as soon as I saw them in the supermarket. I couldn’t believe my luck.

“I used to be on the road a lot with work and it can be a miserable existence being away from your family. I figured these guys would be missing a nice home-cooked meal.”

Yvonne, 39, said the wrestlers, famed for their wild, pantomime behaviour in the ring, were the model guests.

She said: “I sent Phill out for bread and milk and he came home with two wrestling stars.

“He was like a big kid about the guys coming over. I was worried they would end up wrestling in the front room, but they were lovely and really good with the kids.”

Jay and Sonjay are touring the UK with Macclesfield-based wrestling promoter Damien Smith, 29.

Sonjay said: “The family were fantastic. I have a daughter that I’m missing like crazy so was great to be in a welcoming family environment.”

Jay, who starred with Mickey Rourke in the 2008 film The Wrestler, said: “Phill and his family were really cool. It was so generous of them to invite us for a meal. I had a blast.”

Jay and Sonjay will be fighting Manchester-based wrestlers Cyanide and Jack Gallagher at the FutureShock event at Stockport Guild Hall on Sunday.
