A woman is taking on a gruelling obstacle course this Saturday to help former soldiers.

Bernadette McKenna, from Macclesfield, is part of a team taking part in the Born Survivor Challenge at Capesthorne Hall.

It is no easy feat for the 67-year-old, who is aiming to raise cash for ABF The Soldiers' Charity.

It is a charity close to her heart as Bernadette who is the secretary of the East Cheshire branch.

She said: "This will be a huge challenge for me because I am 67 and I have over the last decade become rather lazy about exercise and fitness.

"However, having a personal trainer daughter I have suffered the inevitable nagging about fitness and she has taken me under her wing and has been trying to get me fit.

"I am now ready to walk, jog, crawl, wade and climb over 10km, including 30 plus hardcore obstacles, which Born Survivor proudly promises.

"My reasons for taking on this challenge should be obvious. I hope that I can raise awareness and money for the ABF Charity.

"Having just returned from a Battlefield Tour to Flanders and Normandy, where I have seen evidence of the huge sacrifices made by our parents and grandparents in both wars and which continue to be made by countless others in our Armed Forces. They and their families need our constant support.

"I know it will be a huge challenge for me, but my one day of discomfort will be nothing compared to the bravery and endurance of the men and women of our Armed Forces."
