A DOTING cat owner whose "Russian White" kitten had to lose a leg after going missing for four days, is worried for Macclesfield’s feline community.

Medical secretary Karen Green, of Bollington Road, was "horrified" when 11-month-old Shadow – an extremely rare breed – limped home at the stroke of midnight, with severe gangrene caused by a suspected animal trap.

"His bone was sticking out of his leg – it was awful, horrific in fact. I haven’t stopped crying for three days. I’ve never really lost sight of him before this in the eight months I’ve had him, and think he may have got caught in some kind of animal trap."

Karen had reported Shadow lost to as many people as she could but suffered mixed reactions on seeing her beloved friend return days later.

After being taken to Cheadle Hulme Veterinary Hospital, it was confirmed that Shadow’s back leg needed to be amputated.

"When he came back the whole of his leg was crushed and mangled. It’s very worrying – anybody could get trapped in these things."

Clare Turnock, from Macclesfield Cat Protection, said it is ten years since she has seen a case as bad as Shadow’s.

"I get a lot of cats reported missing in Bollington who don’t turn up so Shadow has been phenomenally lucky. From the injuries sustained I would put my next mortgage payment on it being some kind of trap."

Karen, who has nurtured cats for 20 years, added: "I have to come out of work to make sure Shadow gets his medication. I hope someone can put a stop to this kind of thing happening again."
