Children, parents and neighbours are celebrating the completion of a play area made possible after two years of fundraising by the community.

The new equipment in South Oak Lane park, Wilmslow, was funded by the Friends of the Pleasure, a group of residents who got together to improve the site.

It’s been a turbulent two years for the group which first applied for money as part of the government’s Playbuilder scheme in 2009.

They won £30,000 which was topped up with £15,000 from WREN and £1,500 from Cheshire East Council.

Harpers Auto Centre, Albert Slacks Funeral Directors, and Friends of Wilmslow Parish donated the shortfall - which also allowed for benches and picnic tables.

A design was drawn in consultation with the community, but the whole project was at risk when the government withdrew Playbuilder money in June 2010.

The Friends heaved a sigh of relief when a reduced grant of £18,600 was reinstated in October – but had to scale back their plans. The new equipment included a basket swing, climbing net, a spinner and springy, and the slide and swings were given a facelift.

Another setback came in May when the basket swing was set on fire in an arson attack, but the council replaced the swing.

Phase two saw a new climbing frame and balance trail installed.

Finally a sign and climbing block have been installed and the old monkey bars and basketball board replaced.

Jonathan Cundall, a Friends member and dad of three, from Northward Road, said: “It’s been a turbulent two years and a long project but well worthwhile.

“The site is very well used and we hope everyone is enjoying it.

“We thank our sponsors and all the neighbours, children and parents who have helped along the way.”
