A comedy with an Olympic twist promises to have Macclesfield’s audiences rolling in the aisles.

Following rave reviews at last year’s Edinburgh Fringe, The Games, pictured, will take to the stage at Duke Street Hall for the Barnaby Festival.

The three-hander stars Keddy Sutton, 40, of Rodney Street, Macclesfield, as Hermaphrodite.

Keddy said: "It’s a spoof on the Olympic Games. You’ll basically turn up and laugh your head off for a whole hour – it’s really silly and tongue-in-cheek and it’s got some great comedy songs in it, some good physical theatre too."

The Games tells the story of three Greek nobodies caught up in a celestial bet between the gods Zeus, Hera and Hercules.

Heroes Stanza (Mark Smith), Darius (Liam Tobin) and Hermaphrodite, travel to compete in the ancient Olympics and take on the heroes of the sporting world – with epic results for mankind.

Directed by Mark Smith and Toby Park of the SpikeTheatre Company, the play includes original music and shadow puppetry. Keddy said: "I’d seen the play and laughed from beginning to end and said I’d like to be in it.

"Then my friend who played my part couldn’t take part in this year’s re-tour so, because I’ve done things with Spike before, they asked me to do it."

She’s looking forward to playing Macclesfield in a tour which also takes in the Lowry, but added: "We’re not wearing much, so I got straight down to Zumba when I got the part – but it didn’t work.

"We’re all knocking 40 and don’t look at all Olympian – but that just makes it funnier."

The Games is on Saturday, June 23 at Duke Street Hall, at 7.30pm. Buy tickets online at www.barnabyfestival.org.uk or from the Visitor Information Centre in Market Place, Macclesfield. Details at http://thegames-spiketheatre.com .
