Police investigating the rape of a woman in Macclesfield last weekend are re-appealing for two witnesses to come forward.

Officers have also released a new CCTV image of the man they would like to speak to in connection with the incident, which happened at about 1am on Saturday June 4, in the underpass on Park Lane, which runs under Churchill Way.

A man and a woman who spoke to the suspect on Mill Street before the attack are yet to come forward .

CCTV shows the male witness talking to the suspect as they walked along the road, with the woman walking slightly ahead.

The man is white, of broad build with either a bald or extremely short shaved hair possibly wearing sunglasses on his forehead. He was wearing a white fleece-type top with a small dark coloured or black patch on the rear centre of the top in the collar area. He was also wearing knee length beige cargo-style shorts.

The woman is white with dark brown/black coloured hair tied in a pony tail. She was wearing a white sleeveless top with narrow shoulder straps and a grey/darker coloured short skirt and white trainers similar to running shoes. She had a black shoulder bag over her right shoulder. Both walked down Mill Street past the White Lion pub shortly after midnight.

Also, police are keen to speak to a man who was sitting in the doorway of Ami Lou's Boutique at about 11.20pm.

Detective Inspector Iain Goodwin said extra officers were patrolling the area until the man is caught.

He added: " In the meantime I would continue to urge people to follow basic safety advice and not walk alone, especially at night, try and stick to well lit areas and make sure someone knows where you are going and when you should be back."

The victim in her thirties was approached by the offender on Mill Street and he continued to walk with her despite her dismissing his advances. He followed as she entered the underpass, and attacked her.

The offender is described as white, around 5ft 6in of stocky build. He had very short dark coloured hair and was wearing dark trousers and a dark coloured t-shirt, which was possibly purple and black and had a heavy metal design on it. He also had a pierced ear.
