THE talent of tomorrow is gearing up for the 'biggest event in Alderley'.

Over 1000 musical stars are flocking to the village next month to compete for prizes in the Alderley Edge festival.

Such is the sparkle of the spectacle - which attracts performers of all ages from around the country - entries are already 30 per cent up on last year.

Coun Barbara Armitage, festival chairman, expects a mammoth turnout over the four days, with entrants supported by teachers, friends and families.

"If last year is anything to go by, the Alderley Young Singer of the Year will provide several showstoppers," added Barbara.

"And there's an extra award this year, the winner will be presented with a silver plate and another singer will receive a prize for the best song."

There's even a chance to check out possible 'faces of the future' in television with the title of 'best newsreader' up for grabs.

Other categories include vocal, choirs, recorders, woodwind, brass, percussion, piano, strings, guitar, orchestras and speech and drama.

The festival begins May 15 and tickets are available from shops in Alderley Edge.
