Panic petrol buying in Macclesfield has had drivers queueing for up to an hour to get to pumps.

Motorists are being urged not to panic buy with the threat of strike action by fuel tanker drivers looming - but drivers in the town have not been heeding that advice.

Queues were more than 30 vehicles long yesterday at the Manchester Road Shell garage. Churchill Way and London Road also caused long tailbacks - and the Tesco garage closed after running out.

Julie Poolford, 48, a housewife of Brock Street, Macclesfield, had been queueing outside the Esso garage on London Road for 20 minutes, said: "This is ridiculous.

"But then again I'm queuing like everyone else and my tank is half full so I'm panic buying. My worry is that I won't be able to get my daughter to school."
