Torrential rain caused havoc across Wilmslow with homes and businesses flooded.

Firefighters responded to frantic calls as some residents battled rising flood water after a month’s rainfall in 24 hours.

The deluge hit the area throughout Friday and into Saturday, with further heavy rain on Tuesday causing problems.

Worst hit was Handforth where Manchester Road was closed due to flooding by Wilmslow Garden Centre.

Firefighters were called to Handforth Health Centre on Wilmslow Road after water poured through the roof.

Crews also helped the owners of 16th Century Grade II listed Handforth Hall after a foot of water swept into the ground floor from the fields behind.

Householders on Wadsworth Close spent the night battling rising flood water before firefighters arrived with a portable pump.

Resident Clare Jones, 50, said: “It rained on and off all day and when we came back in the evening there were pools of water in the road in front of the house.

“By 11pm water was gushing out from the field behind our house down the hill and into the house opposite. The owners called the fire brigade at that point because they thought it was going to get in their house.

“It took fire crews until 3am to clear the street.

“This is the second time in the last couple of years something like this has happened. Something needs to be done about it.”

Tom Lester, 18, who lives with mum Joanne Bradburn and step dad Ray opposite, said: “Our house was probably the most affected because we’re in a dip and all the water was coming out of the field behind the house opposite, down the hill and into our garage.

“The water was up to my knee at one point. We put out concrete flags near our door to try and stop the water and luckily none went in the house.

“We got a bit in the garage but there wasn’t any real damage.”

Around the corner St Benedict’s Primary School on Hall Road saw its playing field flooded.

Jane Gornell, head teacher at St Benedict’s said: “Due to the recent bad weather and flooding on the school sports field the sports day we had planned on Tuesday had to be cancelled."

Firefighters also responded to calls from frantic homeowners on Grove Avenue, Wilmslow Road, Cliff Road and Morley Green Road.

Floods also resulted in the cancellation of Wilmslow flower show and the Rotary Club Scarecrow Festival as well as Wilmslow Show.
