YOBS who vandalised a children’s park TWICE in six weeks have been slammed as ‘mindless and selfish’.

The play area on Banbury Close, Hurdsfield, was wrecked on August 20 after vandals tore a large hole in the protective rubber matting.

The damage forced Cheshire East Council to close the park on health and safety grounds.

It has remained closed while the council waits for specialist supplies to repair it.

But police were called for a second time on September 28 after yobs reaped more damage on the park.

The situation has infuriated Hurdsfield councillor Steve Carter, who slammed the vandals as ‘mindless and selfish’.

He said: “I am really angry about this. The play area has been vandalised and is closed because it is dangerous. The estimate for initial repair is an £6,000 which is a lot of money. I have had contact with the council and it is going to fix it soon.

“The small children who use the park in the day time are being denied access due to mindless and selfish vandalism. The fact that it has been damaged a second time is depressing.”

A Cheshire East Council spokesperson said: “The play area had to be closed for safety reasons after vandals ripped up the safer surfacing from under some of the equipment.

“Unfortunately there has been a slight delay because we have been waiting for specialist supplies needed to undertake the repair.

“Once we have the materials we will complete the job as soon as possible over the next couple of weeks.”

Witnesses to the damage should call police on 101.
