A sixteenth-century Rainow pub will reopen this week in the trusty hands of a Michelin-star chef.

The Highwayman shut earlier this year and will relaunch on Thursday (May 20) with new owner Michael Riemenschneider in the kitchen.

Michael has been at the helm of two Michelin-starred restaurants in the past.

Originally from Switzerland, Michael, 27, used to run The Juniper in Altrincham and The Abbey in Penzance and has taken on the pretty Macclesfield Road pub with his fiancee Leah Stevenson. The couple have been busying themselves on a smart refurbishment.

Michael says the food will be ‘modern British with Swiss and German influences and all ingredients are from within a 10 mile radius’ - promising a Michelin standard without the pricetag.

And he is not off to a bad start – with the first weekend nearly booked up.

Michael, who lives with Leah at a farm in Rainow, said: "We have kept a pub feel and really cleaned the place up.

"I offer a Michelin standard at affordable prices - that’s unique, I don’t know anyone else who is doing that.

"Where else can you get Michelin quality food at £15 for a three-course lunch?

"We have very friendly and relaxed staff and I’m certain it will work here in Macclesfield."
