Councillor Michael Jones is expected to be elected as the new council leader today.
The finance chief became the new leader of the Conservative group in March.
This followed Coun Wesley Fitzgerald's resignation as council leader after four years.
Coun Jones is expected to be formally appointed today at a full meeting of the Conservative-controlled council at Tatton Park.
He will be invited to present details of Cabinet members.
Coun Jones, who joined the council last May and was appointed portfolio holder for resources in September, has said he will be a 'hands-on' leader and promised to radically change the authority.
A new Cheshire East mayor will also be appointed at today's meeting.
