A RAINOW mechanic who was found hanging from a carriageway bridge in South Cheshire had a long history of depression, an inquest in Crewe heard last week.

It was said David Evans, 49, of Higher Hazel Trees Farm had already attempted to take his own life a week earlier at home on March 23 this year.

Coroner for Cheshire, Dr Nicholas Rheinberg, sitting at Crewe’s Municipal Buildings, heard how police had rescued Mr Evans that day from his workshop, before he was treated at Macclesfield Hospital for his injuries.

Following a psychological assessment, Mr Evans was discharged on March 30, but ordered not to return to the family home, instead booking into a hotel near Nantwich.

The following morning he was found hanging from a bridge over the A534 Haslington bypass.

Crewe builder Andrew Wright, who first saw Mr Evans from his car, told the inquest: "I just saw a figure hanging. I didn’t stop initially, I turned round at the roundabout and came back before phoning the police.

"He had already died when I saw him."

Sgt Robert Balfour of Wilmslow SIU told the inquest he was satisfied no third party was involved.

In his summary, Mr Rheinberg acknowledged Mr Evans’ state of depression, which on occasions forced him to behave in a bizarre fashion.

He also stated his belief that the initial attempt was serious, and that his release from hospital would "always pose a risk of further incidents of self harm."

He added: "Mr Evans died by his own hand. The manner of his death was quite unsurvivable, and it’s clear from the suicide letters that David did intend to take his own life."

Mr Rheinberg recorded a verdict that David Evans took his own life while the balance of his mind was disturbed.
