Macclesfield’s skyline is to change forever with the demolition of two historic structures.
Work has started to bring down the chimney of Massey Dye Works, which dates back to 1838.
In its place will be five town houses and six apartments on the corner of Loney Street and Peter Street.
The dye works are local important buildings because
of the connection to the town’s silk industry, so will be recorded for historical record, but are not protected from development. The chimney was built in 1945.

Meanwhile, work is due to begin on bringing down the gas holders at Black Lane.
The site contains some of the last remaining features of the once extensive gas works developed by Macclesfield Corporation in the 19th century.
National Grid has been given planning permission to dismantle the large containers which stored natural gas. This is now stored within the main gas system.
Keith Smith, from Macclesfield Civic Society, said: “The two gas holders are an accepted part of the local landscape but it is accepted that they have no significant architectural or historic interest as engineering structures.”
