Silence fell over Macclesfield on Sunday as hundreds of residents gathered to remember fallen heroes.

Avril Fearn, Royal British Legion vice-chairman, was part of the Remembrance Sunday procession which marched with the civic party, Silk Brass and the standard bearers to the cenotaph.

Avirl, 79, : "The parade was longer than usual and the crowds larger - and we got a great deal of applause.

"It seems as if Afghanistan has focussed people's minds more on what we do."

The parade mustered at the back of the town hall before marching to the cenotaph, where there was a civil service.

A service was led by Reverend David Wrightman, of St Michael's and The Rev Marion Tugwood, of the United Reformed Church.

A bell was rung at 11am to begin two minutes' silence.

As the procession, including Mayor Councillor David Neilson and MP David Rutley, marched back to the town hall applause rang out across Market Place.

Avril, of Rugby Drive, Tytherington, who was in the heavy anti-aircraft mixed regiment in the Fifties, added: "The support was fantastic."

* More than 400 Scouts attended six Remembrance Day parades in the Macclesfield area with a further 200 attending the service in Poynton. They helped by laying wreaths, doing readings, and distributing orders of service.

There were also services in Bollington, Poynton and Prestbury. See this week's Express for full details.
