A passionate farmer who was at the forefront of the campaign to demand higher prices for milk has been recognised for his commitment to the cause.
Mike Gorton, who is the National Farmers Union (NFU) North West Dairy Board chairman and runs Harebarrow Farm in Over Alderley, was featured in the Macclesfield Express and also appeared on a number of news channels during the continuing dairy crisis.
He has been awarded the Chartered Institute of Public Relations (CIPR) Communicator of the Year award.
Mike was nominated by NFU Communications adviser Carl Hudspith.
He said: “Whether in print format, over the radio airwaves or down the lens of a television camera, Mike has the ability to inform, educate and gain support from his audience.
“However, it’s not the sheer amount of media work, or the high profile nature of them, which has set Mike apart from his peers.
“Mike took responsibility and battled on behalf of the whole dairy industry at a time when his business was, and still is, under immense pressure. “He is a First Milk Cooperative member and has had the price he receives for his milk cut dramatically.
“Executing a successful media campaign for his industry whilst under the real threat of losing his business, I feel, sets him apart from the crowd this year and I’m pleased my professional industry body, the CIPR, agree.”
Following the event, Mike said: “In gratefully accepting this award, I do so on behalf of all the NFU members, officeholders and staff who have worked unstintingly on the Dairy Crisis campaign. This accolade serves to illustrate the far reaching impact that an NFU campaign can deliver.”
Mike was presented with his prize at CIPR North West Pride Awards, this year held at the Midland Hotel in Manchester.
