Joy Division and New Order legend Peter Hook paid a visit to King’s School in Macclesfield to speak to students about his legendary career.

The bassist was the latest in a series of public speakers to address pupils at King’s Girls’ Division on the secrets of success in their chosen field.

But he admitted that his time in front of the pupils was one of his most nerve-wracking performances.

He said: “It was totally odd that I’ve stood in front of 100,000 people playing guitar and not been as nervous as I was speaking to 100 girls.

“I have had a wonderful career and been very lucky, but there are pitfalls and you need to get good advice before you sign anything. The secret to success though is simple: keep trying and never give up. When you do, you are finished.”

Peter’s lecture was a huge draw with girls and many of the older generation bringing in their own vinyl albums for signing, including principal Jo Anderson.

On his relationship with Macclesfield, Peter said: “Because of Ian Curtis and always wishing I could have done more to prevent him taking his own life, I must admit I have had a love-hate relationship with Macclesfield.

“However, I fully appreciate there would never have been a Joy Division or a New Order without Macclesfield and it’s only now that I come here more often that I am seeing and enjoying many more of its finer points.

“There is a lot more to tell but everyone will have to wait for my new book Power, Corruption and Lies Inside New Order, which is coming soon.”
