A double amputee and his young cousin walked to Macclesfield Town’s FA Cup game at the weekend to raise money for the struggling club.

Macclesfield Town fans George Blackshaw and Harry Irlam, both 14, have raised nearly £2,000 by walking 12 miles from Mobberley to the Moss Rose to watch the third round game against Sheffield Wednesday, which ended in a 1-1 draw.

For George, who lost an arm and a leg in a lawnmower accident when he was a toddler, it as the furthest he had ever walked.

The young fans organised the sponsored walk to raise money for the club which is in serious financial strife.

They left the Bird in Hand pub at 8.30am and arrived at the Moss Rose at 1.15pm.

George, who lives in Lower Stretton near Warrington, with mum Cathy, dad Tim and brothers Tim, Charlie and Ben, said:  “The walk got really tough half way through but we had the support of our friends and family and just kept going.

“The club is in big financial trouble and we wanted to do all we could to help.

“We enjoyed the game, it was good to see so many people there.  We will keep supporting the team.”

George’s mum Cathy said: “We were worried about George walking all that way, he has a false leg and I was concerned. But he did it all himself and we’re so proud.

“We were all so impressed that two young boys had the initiative to so something like this.”

George and Harry are season ticket holders at the club.

King’s pupil Harry, who lives in Mobberley, has been going to Macclesfield games since he was five.

He said: “I used to go with my dad and grandad so the club has been in my heart since a young age.

“I want to help the team in every possible way so the fans and I can go and enjoy watching them at the Moss Rose every week.”
