Lily Hyde, seven, became friends with Layla McCarthy, four, after meeting on a family holiday in Turkey three years ago.

The families kept in touch and the girls developed a friendship.

However, in 2012 Layla was diagnosed with leukaemia and despite battling the disease into remission has recently relapsed.

Lily, of Brookfield Lane, Macclesfield, decided to take action and donated some of her hair to The Little Princess Trust, a charity which makes wigs for young cancer victims and CLIC Sargent, which provide clinical, practical and emotional support to the families of children fighting the disease.

When Roe 11 hairdressers on Roe Street heard about Lily’s fundraising they offered to help.

So far Lily, who goes to Puss Bank School, has raised more then £400 from her efforts.

Lily said: “I met Layla in Turkey on holiday and we became friends. We met up a few times after we came home and then I was told the horrible news that Layla was really poorly.

“She was in hospital and lost all her hair because of the medicine she was given. She was getting better and they had come to visit and then we were told after she had gone home that the leukaemia had come back. I then decided that I wanted to help a children’s cancer charity by donating my hair for a wig and getting sponsored for having it cut off. I love my new hair and everyone says it suits me.”

Layla relapsed in January and is undergoing chemotherapy again and awaiting a transplant.

Mum Rachel said: “Everyone, including me, her dad Robert and sister Daisy, have been very proud of her efforts for fundraising.”
