Around 30 people were evacuated after a blaze at a hotel and pub in Prestbury. A blaze tore through the Legh Arms in the centre of the village last night.

Fire crews were called to the building at around 7pm yesterday evening and discovered a fire in a bedroom on the first floor of the property.

A total of four fire engines and a hydraulic platform were dispatched to the village to help tackle the blaze.

Firefighters spent several hours battling the flames with crews remaining on the scene until early this morning.

Cheshire Fire and Rescue service say 'extensive' damage has been suffered to parts of the historic building.

The cause of the blaze is unknown but investigators say it started in the chimney and spread.

Colin Heyes, Fire Investigation Officer at the incident said: "The fire started with the chimney and spread to timbers within the floor construction.

"There was extensive fire damage to a bedroom which also affected the roof space.

"The fire alarm did activate and around 30 people were lead to safety prior to the arrival of firefighters."
