A Macclesfield businessman has admitted to committing a range of sexual offences against young children.

Russell Kellar, 49, who owns a menswear shop on Chestergate, pleaded guilty to abusing two girls when he appeared before Chester Crown Court yesterday (Tuesday).

The first girl was just five-years-old when the offences began in the mid-Seventies, and then continued through to the early Eighties.

There was then a break of more than two decades, before Kellar began abusing the other girl in 2001. She was seven-years-old and the offences continued until 2004.

Father-of-four Kellar, who was tanned and wore a dark suit, white shirt and a red tie, made a ten-minute appearance in the dock, and spoke only to confirm his name and answer 16 charges.

He pleaded not guilty to two charges of gross indecency with one girl under the age of ten, but admitted two offences of gross indecency with her while she was under the age of 16.

He also pleaded guilty to another two offences of gross indecency with the second girl, while she was under the age of ten.

He also admitted nine offences of indecent assault on both girls and one count of sexual assault against the second girl while she was under 13.

Sean Brogan, counsel for the defence, said that Kellar had attempted suicide after being arrested and charged by Cheshire Police, but he did not believe full psychiatric reports were necessary before sentencing.

Judge Roger Dutton adjourned the case for a pre-sentence report, and Kellar will now be sentenced next month.

He was bailed to live with his mother in Southport until the next court date.

His former home, a £600,000 semi-detached house on Park Lane in Macclesfield, was put on the market at a reduced rate last year, as was his Chestergate store.
