Mr Methane is kicking up a diplomatic stink after a spoof clip of him performing the Romanian national anthem by breaking wind appeared on television.

Paul Oldfield, aka Mr Methane, is famed for his professional flatulism.

But he was blasted by angry emails after the eastern European channel ‘Atena 3’ aired a fake video of him performing on Britain’s Got Talent in 2009.

In the show he had performed The Blue Danube in his inimitable way. But the clip – tampered with to make it seem like he was producing the national anthem – was on current affairs programme Stirea Zilei (News of the Day), on which former Romanian prime minister Adrian Nastase was also a guest.

Paul, 45, said: "The first I knew about it was all these emails and responses on YouTube saying what a disgrace to Romania it was.

"I panicked at first thinking their national anthem was Blue Danube, which is what I performed on Britain's Got Talent, I even Googled it to have a listen and compare, but they sounded totally different." The born-and-bred Maxonian, who now lives in Cumbria, has made a complaint to the Romanian Embassy about the illegal use of the footage, which is owned by TALKbackThames.

The former Puss Bank Primary pupil added: "I think I deserve an apology. If they want to insult the Romanian national anthem and seek a confrontation with outraged Romanian citizens everywhere, they should take responsibility and not try to pass it off as mine."

He added: "It puts me in a bad light and it not fair on [Britain’s Got Talent judges] Amanda Holden and Piers Morgan either because the clip shows them laughing.

"It’s frustrating for me because what I do is already controversial, I don’t need angry Romanians knocking at my door for something I didn't do."

TALKbackThames, also behind The X Factor, confirmed it had not licensed the footage and that the channel did not request to use it. The company is investigating the matter.
