BIG Brother has a brand new toy - and it will be watching you.

Fast on the wheels of new police mountain bikes, the borough's first "Head Cam" has just been launched onto the streets of Macclesfield.

PC Rob Simpson, who has been road testing the high-tech video device, said: "We are quite excited about this and the opportunity it presents.

"They will help us gather better evidence and act as a deterrent to would-be offenders."

The 3kg camera, which costs £1,150, can film eight hours of footage without a battery recharge, and can store up to 360 hours of live action.

Made by "Kreative Innovative Technology Ltd", the adaptable head gear can be attached to hats, helmets - and even dogs.

The cameras cost £1,150 but PC Simpson says it is set to save the taxpayer thousands of pounds.

"Now offenders will be reluctant to plead not guilty when they know we have them on camera.

"And that will save the taxpayer thousands of pounds for the cost of trials."

He said in its first week in Macclesfield, the device had gone down well on the streets.

"People seem happy with the camera and many have said it will make them feel safer." He said the gadget could also be used to provide crucial evidence when offenders make allegations against police officers.

"We will feel more comfortable doing our jobs, knowing we have that back-up," he added.

"And it will be particularly good for combating crimes like swearing in the street."

And he reassured the public: "This is not an invasion of privacy because the camera is not covert. They are plain to see on the helmet and we are making no attempt to hide them."

The force currently only has one camera, but more may be introduced.
