MANAGEMENT at Wilmslow-based Royal London Insurance say jobs are safe.

Fears of redundancies were raised after leaks the firm, a leader in the insurance industry, was planning to axe up to 500 jobs.

But a spokesman said the main operations centre in Wilmslow would be unaffected. Instead, up to 20 new jobs could be created at the Alderley Road site following a change in the company's door-to-door collection service nationwide.

Royal London manages funds worth £24 billion and restructured a large slice of its cash collection service last year as customers changed over to electronic cash transfers instead of paying at the door.

Spokesman David Hughes said the firm was one of the few left in the industry still operating door-to-door cash collections.

He said: "Details have now been released outlining the way in which Royal London proposes to restructure its premium operations which manages cash collections.

"The proposals come as a result of customers opting to pay premiums by direct debit and continued reduction in their business as existing policies mature or claims are made.

"These changes are reducing the number of households which need a monthly cash collection."

He added that there would also be a change over from cash book collections to computers, using palmtop technology.

"It looks as if around 20 more jobs could be created in Wilmslow the main accounting and IT centre which will be offered to those at local offices."

He said the proposals were being discussed with staff and unions.
