Hundreds pay tribute to Nepal plane crash victim Raymond Eagle at funeral

Hundreds of mourners attended St Michael’s Church in Macclesfield to pay their final respects to Nepal plane crash victim Raymond Eagle.

Hundreds of mourners attended St Michael’s Church in Macclesfield to pay their final respects to Nepal plane crash victim Raymond Eagle.

Mr Eagle, 58, of West Bond Street, Macclesfield, was among 19 people who died when the plane crashed after take-off form the capital Kathmandu.

More than 200 guests attended the service led by The Rev Dr Gary Bowness, before heading to a private committal at Macclesfield Crematorium.

Speaking at the funeral, Howard Kemp, a member of East Cheshire Outdoor Group, described him as a an extremely fit and happy man.

He said: "He once told me living in Macclesfield every day is like a holiday. He loved the countryside, walking, cycling and running, he loved a good pint and a lively chat."

As well as a keen walker and cyclist, Mr Eagle was a member of Wilmslow Running Club where he held the club record of a marathon in three hours and two minutes.

Mr Kemp added: "He was one of the fastest and fittest men in his age group.

"The minute’s silence at the Macclesfield Half Marathon shows how well he was regarded in the running world."

Mr Eagle taught psychology at Sir John Deane’s College in Northwich before quitting his job to work as a support worker for Macclesfield Supported Living Network on the Weston Estate.

Jan Errington, who worked with him at the college, also spoke at the funeral.

She said: "He was exceptionally well read and his quirky opinions could spark lively debate.

"As a teacher Ray inspired many students, they thought very highly of him. I feel privileged to have been allowed to speak today in honour of a remarkable man."
