Hundreds of people lit up Macclesfield’s streets as they took part in a 10k charity walk around the town.

The Silver Starlight Stomp – known until this year as the Midnight Walk – was organised by the East Cheshire Hospice and saw more than 500 people take to the streets in fancy dress in aid of the charity.

For the first time in the event’s history, participants were invited to run the course – also setting off at midnight – and 50 plucky competitors took up the jogging challenge.

Camilla Crockett, events fundraising officer at the hospice, said: “It was fantastic. There was an incredible atmosphere and there was a real buzz in the room.

“Everyone was dressed up and illuminated in one way or the other. Thank you to everyone for taking part, and a huge thank you from everyone at the hospice and the volunteers that helped on the night and in the lead up.

“We were thrilled with how it all went and can’t wait for next year.

“As far as we know this is the only 10k race like it in the north.

“We’ve got a team of nurses at the hospice who have been training to run 10k so we thought it would be good to let them run at this event.

“There were about 50 nurses, staff and their families who took part in the end.”

The hospice also used the event to introduce its new mascot – Sunny the dog – who has been chosen to represent the loyalty provided by the hospice.

The final amount raised by the event, sponsored by Peaks and Plains Housing Trust, is yet to be confirmed.
