IT WAS the moment Macclesfield had been waiting and praying for.

The four East Cheshire Hospice beds that were closed due to a serious cash shortage have now been officially opened by the charity's president the Bishop of Chester.

The Rt Reverend Dr Peter Forster and hospice vice president Sir Nicholas Winterton officially re-opened the beds at a special ribbon cutting ceremony at the Millbank drive building to celebrate the historic event.

All 15 beds are now fully functioning once again to provide the essential care and support for the local community.

Sheila Goodliffe, chief executive of the hospice, said: "Due to tremendous support from local businesses, organisations and individuals the hospice has enough funds available to support the beds until March 2004.

It is hoped that the level of donations and fundraising will be maintained in order that the 15 in-patient beds and the other hospice services can always be available for the people who most need them."

If you can help the hospice with a donation or if you can spare any time as a volunteer please contact Christine Blease on 01625 433477.

A new honorary treasurer is needed for the hospice along with new trustees to serve on the charity's council. If you would like to be considered to help ensure that the high quality of services are maintained please contact Sheila Goodliffe on 01625 610364, or e-mail sgoodliffe@echospice.fsnet.co.uk for an information pack.
