A house fire in Handforth has prompted a warning from firefighters – urging residents to unplug heated hair appliances when they are not in use.

At around 8.10pm on Tuesday, March 22 Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service was called to the incident on Ullswater Road.

Group Manager, Pete Walsh was at the scene, he explained: "The crews were confronted with an extremely difficult incident. The property had become smoke logged and there was a real risk of a backdraft, explosion which can be extremely dangerous to those trying to fight the fire and can result in the total loss of a property.

"The firefighters involved did a fantastic job in handling this challenging situation and preventing further damage to the property."

The crews, from Poynton and Macclesfield, used specialist ventilation fans and hose reel jets to fight the fire, which involved the flooring and floor joists in a bedroom.

The fire was caused by a set of heated rollers that had been left plugged in.

Pete added: "I must stress to anyone who uses heated rollers, hair straighteners and such like to ensure that they are unplugged when not being used. It is all too easy for the heat they give off to start a fire."

The Service would also encourage everyone to make sure that they have a working smoke alarm. A Home Safety Assessment had previously been carried out at this property and smoke alarms were fitted.
