A hit and run driver who ploughed into a teenager - catapulting him across three gardens - has been jailed.

Kishan Patel, 24, overtook a string of cars before careering onto the pavement on Park Lane, Poynton and hitting Chris Harrop, 18, who was walking with his mum Lindsey and dog, in the ‘shared space’ road scheme area.

Chris, of Yew Tree Lane in Poynton, was thrown through the air across three gardens before he landed, Chester Crown Court was told. Patel sped off, without checking on the teenager, who suffered a punctured lung, broken ribs, fractured ankle and head injury.

The victim’s dog Skye suffered a fractured spine.

The court heard Chris still suffers from migraines and his mum is traumatised after seeing her son thrown through the air.

There were stunned gasps in court when CCTV was played showing Patel overtaking a car, which was turning right, in his BMW before careering towards the teenager.

Patel, of Arundel Road, Cheadle Hulme, sobbed as he was sent to prison for two years and eight months after pleading guilty to failing to stop and causing serious injury by dangerous driving.

Judge Roger Dutton said: “A description of your driving will fail to explain the seriousness of what you did when you see that CCTV footage.

“You could not fail to be horrified by the sight of the young man being hit by your vehicle and catapulted three gardens along so he sustained very serious injury.

“I’m sure there may have been a time when he may not have survived.

“This was deliberate impatient driving at speed in a built-up area and the consequences have been dreadful. You drove off at speed without a care what happened to your victim.”

Prosecutor Jayne Morris said Patel mounted a pavement to undertake a car before crossing raised strips in the shared space scheme to overtake two more vehicles before colliding with Chris on the pavement.

Defending, Keith Hartley-Jones said Patel is a valued member of his community, adding: “He accepts responsibility and makes no concessions to mitigate his driving.”

His driving ban will extend to four years after he leaves prison.

Chris’s mum Lindsey said after the hearing: “It’s a relief and we can move on now but we hope he learns his lesson.

“Chris has lasting scars but he’s going to university and I’m very proud. We want to thank everyone who helped us after the accident.”
