A forgotten gatehouse at Alderley Edge cemetery could become a history centre for the village.

Parish councillors have been working to get improvements at the cemetery and were pleased to secure a programme of work with Cheshire East.

This has included replacing deteriorating fenceposts, installing flower tubs, a new sweeping regime, footpath repairs and work to stand up headstones toppled years ago in the name of health and safety.

Councillors have been waiting to see what will happen to Cemetery Lodge, which is owned by Cheshire East but has degraded since the groundsman moved out.

Coun Melanie Connor has suggested that the lodge is used as a history centre with information about the village.

She said: “We have got this building which is quite iconic and historical documents, so can’t we have it refurbished and used as an information centre for people to learn about Alderley Edge?

“It’s never going to be used as a house again, so we could use it for something quite unique instead of letting it rot.

“Schools and local groups could book visits.”

Coun Connor is looking at the details and costs to report back to the council.
