Families turned out for the first Wilmslow Music Festival to celebrate the town’s musical talent.

Around 1,500 people attended the event at Wilmslow High School which featured singers, choirs, musicians and other performers from around the town.

Restaurant and cafe owners showed off their skills in the food arena.

The festival was thought up by Frank McCarthy, chairman of the Wilmslow Show, who felt the town could make the most of the show weekend with a music event.

He teamed up with John Mills, semi-retired marketing manager of Wilmslow Symphony Orchestra, and the plans spiralled.

John said: “The weather was fantastic and it went like clockwork. We particularly liked the fact there were people of all ages, lots of families, everyone enjoying themselves and appreciating the effort put in by performers.

“The breadth of talent was amazing. Many of the individuals, societies and choirs had never played to such a large audience and they loved showcasing their talent.

“The feedback has been fantastic.”

The evening came to a close with the grand finale which saw soloists and choir members come together with director Mike Bramhall to perform Elbow’s hit song One Day Like This.

John said: “Hopefully there will be the energy for another one and it can become an annual event.

“We have put Wilmslow on the map musically and hopefully in 2014 even more people will want to take part.”
