A woman who started her career with Cheshire Police has returned as the new deputy chief constable.

Helen King replaces Graeme Gerrard who has retired She joined Cheshire Constabulary in 1986, working the beat of Chester, Runcorn, Widnes, Warrington and Northwich.

She rose up the ranks and became Superintendent of Halton for three years and Head of Human Resources.

As Chief Superintendent she was Head of Professional Standards and the first Area Commander of the Northern Area.

She was formerly Assistant Chief Constable with Merseyside Police where led improvements in call handling, crime recording and criminal justice.

In 2009 she took over the Area Operations portfolio, with responsibility for more than 4,000 officers and staff. She has successfully improved performance with a significant reduction in crime levels.

Helen King said: "I have a very clear view that as Police Officers we are here to serve the public and do all we can to keep our communities safe and make them feel safe. Whatever challenges we may currently face, that core task does not change. At the heart of everything we have a continuing commitment to neighbourhood policing."

Moira Chapman, a member of Cheshire Police Authority, which appointed Helen said: "It was a great pleasure to welcome Helen back as she spent much of the early part of her career with Cheshire Constabulary."
