STANDING at the finish line of the Race for Life at Tatton Park last month, waiting for my wife and daughter to complete their 5K, I was overwhelmed by the palpable dedication of so many ladies (and a few chaps) dressed in tutus wigs and a sea of pink crossing the line.

The 5K and 10K run events followed the Pretty Muddy race the day before and were organised by Cancer Research UK, encourages ladies to run, jog and walk to raise money to progress medical science in the prevention, detection and treatment of cancer.

Many there were cancer survivors themselves, or running in thanks for the work of cancer research institutions.

Many were also running in memory of loved ones.

It was moving to see the heartfelt messages scribbled on runners’ backs, their tears and cheers as people crossed the finish line, and the numerous private and personal achievements and journeys people had endured to be there on that uplifting and inspiring Sunday lunchtime.

From the air cadet volunteers to the unwavering enthusiasm of race marshals, the positivity lifted everyone. Many colleagues from our CCG and practices entered these races over the weekend and it has really bought the team together. Over summer there are similar charity events locally, including the Macmillan Cycletta at Tatton Park on Sunday, October 2, and the Macclesfield Half Marathon on September 25, for which East Cheshire Hospice is looking for volunteers.

All these events have value far beyond the money raised for local and national charities.

They bring together people with conditions, or survivors of conditions, with people running to remember, honour or develop a legacy for those who have lost people close to them.

They raise awareness, build a community spirit and improve the fitness of those runner and walkers.

I’d like to take this opportunity, on behalf of the local health services, to thank all those who partake in these events, who sponsor them, and who volunteer to support them.
