A pair of guessing grans have spoken of their shock after becoming the stars of Poundland’s Christmas Advert.

Sisters Carmen Yomans and Virtudes ‘Betty’ Rial were shopping on Mill Street in November when they were approached by a camera crew.

They were asked to look at various items and guess how much they cost before learning the bargains were being sold for £1 in Poundland.

Carmen, who is married to Roy and has three children and five grandchildren, and Betty, who is married to Tony and has three children, six grandchildren and one great-grandchild, both forgot all about it until they started getting calls from family and friends this week.

Carmen, 53, of Birchinall Close, Ivymeade, said: “It was such a shock to hear that they used our bit in the advert. It was really exciting to think that advert will be going out to so many homes all over Christmas.

Betty, 58, of Grassmere, Ivymeade, said: “It was very weird seeing us on TV.”

Poundland’s no frills Christmas advert is at odds with the other high street stores’ tradition of spending millions on trying to convince shoppers to spend with them.
