IMPROVEMENTS are underway in Wilmslow to enhance the look of the town centre.

Action has been stepped up by Cheshire East Council after prodding from residents and councillor Rod Menlove who has lobbied for an 'action plan' to clean up Grove Street.

Enhancements range from tree pruning, realigning the paving stones and cleaning up the street furniture, including public benches.

Councillor Men love, who called for a clean up campaign after residents responded to a survey, said the town centre was looking 'jaded' and neglected in recent years.

He said: “Wilmslow town centre is now a priority for a programme of improvements agreed with Cheshire East Council. We got together last week with council officers to walk around the centre of Wilmslow and agree a plan of action. It was important to me that Grove Street had immediate attention. The weeds have gone, the trees have been pruned with the base plates cleaned and the block paving under the seats cleared of detritus.  So we are now getting things back to how they should be and I will be keeping my eyes open to see that all items are maintained properly and kept up to standard. This is just the start and other improvements such as renovating the seating, will follow.”

Two other town centre areas have also been tidied up with foliage overhanging Alderney Road central walkway pruned and overgrown shrubbery in the Romany Caravan gardens removed.

Noun Men love added: “Both these areas look much better. The Alderney Road central walkway is now light and airy and a pleasure to walk along. We can now see that the gardens around the Romany Caravan are surprisingly large. This area must have the potential to be used far more to the benefit of all residents and visitors. I have already discussed this with The Wilmslow Trust who come up with some great ideas.  All of us want to live in an attractive and pleasant environment and I am grateful that the new Cheshire East Council has responded so quickly and positively to my campaigning on this issue.”

The clean up programme will run throughout the Autumn and include repairing street furniture such as bins and tiered planters, repairing damaged verges and replacing cracked paving.
