A therapist who works with Parkinson’s disease sufferers in Bollington will trek the Great Wall of China for the charity battling the debilitating condition.

Lindsey Greensmith will hike 100km over tough terrain for five days in aid of the Parkinson’s Disease Society.

For Lindsey, 42, a beauty therapist of Westminster Road, Macclesfield, it will be a brave step into the unknown, having never travelled alone or taken part in such a strenuous walking challenge.

But she knows better than most why the fundraiser is so important, working weekly with the Alex Project at Bollington leisure centre, treating a group who suffer from Parkinson’s with massage therapy.

The mum-of-one said: "I have the pleasure of working with a wonderful group of Parkinson’s disease sufferers and see first-hand the struggles they have to cope with. This has spurred me on to do what I can to raise money for the vital research into finding a cure. The society depends on donations and needs all the help it can get – I’m doing it for them and for my group in Bollington."

The walk will take place in September with 14 people from around the UK and Lindsey must raise £3,000 to take part.

She will hike from Gubeikou to Simatai over five days and her training at Macclesfield’s beauty spots has taken her ‘up Teggs Nose one minute and around Macclesfield Forest the next!’

She added: "We will be walking 12 to 15 miles a day and that may not seem like much but it’s really difficult terrain as the wall scales the sides of steep mountains. I’ve never done anything like this before, never flown somewhere like China on my own to take part in a walk with people I don’t know. I’m apprehensive as I have to raise a lot of money quickly, but it’s going to be an adventure and a good change for me."
