A grandmother-of-nine who has written university textbooks has turned his attention to relationships within the workplace.

Derek Torrington, 81, from Styal, is emeritus professor of management at the University of Manchester and has worked with the university for 40 years.

He lives with wife Barbara on Hollin Lane and has written 50 titles on human resources and management.

His Human Resource Management book has been in print since 1979, translated into Russian, Serbo-croat Mandarin and Portuguese and is the standard university text book in the UK.

Now the author has published a book – Managing to Manage - to help people in all jobs deal with people better.

Derek said: “I’ve written lots of books but this is a different target market.

“Everyone who goes to work has some element of management in their jobs. Everybody has to cope with the people around them and customers.

“The book is all about managing these relationships.”

Derek says managers must not forget how they got to where they are.

He said: “Managers must not forget their specialism.

“It involves the manager using the skills and knowledge acquired through qualifications, training and experience.

“Managers abandon these skills at their peril.”
