Hundreds braved the rain to kick off the countdown to Christmas in Maccelsfield.

Market Place played host to a Christmas Market, street entertainers, kids’ crafts and bands leading up to the big Christmas lights switch on.

The evening was rounded off with a Spectacular Fireworks display on Saturday.

Pete Turner, Macclesfield Town Clerk, praised the work of all those who helped bring the event together.

He said: “The day was dogged with terrible weather and we really didn’t think many would turn up, but Macclesfield’s determination showed through and by 4pm the Market place was full with people ready to see the lights come on and enjoy the atmosphere. I really must thank everyone who took part or helped organise the event, staff, councillors and volunteers.

“We had on stage, during the worst of the weather, Dance Addicts, Clonter Opera, Bella Dance Studio, Macclesfield Ukulele Band, Macclesfield Youth Brass and Macclesfield Community Brass bands and Beech Hall Choir. We also enjoyed the performances of local musicians Coral and Will Connor.

“I would like to say a particular thank you to Father Christmas for taking time out to switch on our lights at this very busy time of year and his procession through town was great to see.

“The crowd really got behind the Christmas Lights switch on and I hope they enjoyed the event”

The new Macclesfield Town Council funded the Christmas Lights and the switch on event for the first time this year and are looking to build on the hard work already put in by the community over previous years.
