GALE-force winds and wintry conditions caused fallen trees and road closures around the town.

Police shut the A537 Macclesfield to Buxton road, known as the Cat and Fiddle, on Tuesday due to snowfall on the hills and in town.

The web-cam positioned by landlords at the Cat and Fiddle pub, with maccinfo.com, showed bleak scenes for residents and drivers on the treacherous stretch.

Snow on the Cat and Fiddle road in Macclesfield

Cheshire East issued a weather warning for the east of the borough around Macclesfield and sent out gritters on all major roads, with hill roads treated twice.

A spokesman said there was some isolated flooding across other roads.

A large beech tree blew across Chester Road on Saturday in strong to gale force winds, narrowly avoiding an oncoming van and prompting Express readers to send in pictures of the dramatic scene.

Friends Allan Kirton, from Macclesfield, and Dave Richards, from Alderley Edge, were driving in the van and stopped just metres from where the tree came down.

The road was closed for three hours while the council cleared the tree and further work is required to remove the base and roots and to reinstate the verge.

Allan, 50, said:  “The tree narrowly missed crushing us.

“It all happened very quickly, the tree seemed to get faster as it fell.

“We’re lucky to be alive, I would not have liked to be under that tree, we wouldn’t be here now.”

Visit cat-cam.co.uk for the Cat and Fiddle web cam and the Cheshire East website for up-to-date information on where the gritters are working.

A Met Office spokesman said a weather front passed through yesterday to bring the snow and that some wintry showers are possible this morning (Wednesday).

This afternoon (Wednesday) is expected to see strong winds and heavy rain, which is likely to wash away any settled snow.

Another band of rain is expected on Friday.
