A CHELFORD garage worker who died in hospital after golfers found him engulfed in flames will be remembered by friends and family at his funeral tomorrow (Thursday).

Stephen Okill lost his fight for life on Tuesday, April 10, after being discovered, on fire, in a field near Peover Golf Club.

A service will take place at St John's Church, Chelford, at 1pm.

A private, family only burial will follow in Gawsworth Parish Churchyard.

Mr Okill, who worked as an attendant at Chelford petrol station, and suffered severe burns before his tragic death, leaves two brothers, three sisters and his mother, with whom he lived.

On the day of the incident, five fire crews were first on the scene, and one appliance from Knutsford also attended.

A spokesman for Cheshire Police described the scene when they arrived at the site.

He said: "We were called to Back Lane at Lower Peover at 5.30pm on April 10, to reports of a fire near the golf club.

"We arrived to find a man who had sustained injuries due to fire.

"Officers at the scene did their best to make him as comfortable as possible, until the ambulance arrived."

He was taken to the accident and emergency unit at Wythenshawe Hospital where his condition was described as "critical but stable" at first, but he died later.

At the service it will be family flowers only but, if desired, donations can be sent to Chelford Church or the Wythenshawe Hospital Burns Unit.
