Former Cheshire East Council leader Michael Jones has today resigned from the local Conservative group.

The Chronicle understands the former Tory group leader emailed all Conservatives on Cheshire East a few minutes ago to announce his resignation from the group ‘with immediate effect’.

Coun Jones said, in the email which has been leaked to the Chronicle: “As I always said I do not support blue on blue attacks and therefore I tender my resignation from the [Cheshire East] group.

He said he had been the subject of personalised attacks.

He added: “These attacks are now very personal and as such disappointing. The false allegations and personal attacks do a disservice to the party and to public life in general. Those making such wildly inaccurate comments need to stop as they are damaging the party and their constituents.”

Coun Jones states in the email that he will ‘make further announcements shortly but in the meantime I will try and complete my deals for the good of the area and concentrate on my ward and to try and create positive actions, whilst remaining a member of the Conservative party’.

Speculation is now rife that he may soon quit the council altogether - although when the Chronicle contacted him for a response he neither denied nor confirmed this.

Instead he said: “At the moment, I will be an Independent Conservative.”
