The Treacle Market has made the final round of one of the country’s most prestigious food competitions.

The monthly Macclesfield event, which takes place this weekend, is in the final 10 of the BBC Radio 4 Food and Farming Awards. Its organisers say the nomination in the Best Food Market category proves the town is a serious contender when it comes to quality food.

Jane Munro, a Treacle founder, said: "It’s a really big deal and just to be in the final 10 means Macclesfield is associated with great food in people’s minds. The lovely thing is we are not even sure who nominated us so it’s not something we went chasing for ourselves."

Co-founder Debbie Quinn added: "I’m absolutely thrilled. We have taken our responsibility to ensure that we have only top quality producers on the market very seriously."

The final three in the competition will be announced this Sunday during the market. This weekend will also feature a special Produce Show with classes from treacle cake to vegetables and flowers. There will also be Harvest Festival hymns at St Michael’s Church. Go to www.treaclemacclesfield.co.uk .
