Firefighters needed four hours to put out a 'ferocious' blaze on grassland in Wilmslow.

The fire, on Lindow Common off Moor Lane, spread rapidly on Thursday night (May 20), reaching the size of four football pitches and briefly threatening a nearby caravan park.

Fire crews were alerted at 6.20pm and appliances attended from Wilmslow, Macclesfield and Poynton. They needed water from a nearby drainage ditch to bring it under control.

Jon Boothby, watch manager at Macclesfield Fire Station, said: "There was apparently a static home park within 500 metres of the fire and during the early stages it was quite ferocious and spread quite rapidly in that direction, so there was a slight concern we might have to notify residents and police to have them evacuated.

"That didn't happen and we managed to bring the fire under control. Conditions were very dry with the grass very much like straw. It was quite a still night which assisted us. We used four jets to extinguish the fire which was approximately 10,000 sqm - we reckon that's about four football pitches."
